Stardew Valley Relationships Guide: How to Build Friendships and Find Love

Why Relationships Matter

Friendships in Stardew Valley aren't just flavor. Each heart level unlocks something: a recipe, a useful item, or a story moment that deepens your understanding of the town. Higher friendship means villagers send you gifts in the mail. Marriage brings a companion who helps on the farm and gives you daily food buffs.

More practically: Pelican Town is small. You'll walk past these people every day. Getting to know them transforms the town from background scenery into a community you care about.

How the System Works

Friendship Points and Hearts

Every villager tracks friendship in points. 250 points = 1 heart. Hearts cap at 10 for regular villagers, 14 for spouses (8 to become dateable, then 14 after marriage with a Mermaid's Pendant).

Ways to gain points:

  • Talk to them: +20 per day (only first conversation counts)
  • Give a liked gift: +45 points
  • Give a loved gift: +80 points
  • Give on their birthday: ×8 multiplier (so a loved gift on a birthday = 640 points)
  • Complete a bundle item they mentioned
  • Help with a request on the bulletin board: varies

Ways to lose points:

  • Give a hated gift: -40 points
  • Miss a birthday (you don't give a gift): -20 points × number of days missed
  • Marry without first completing a heart event: impossible (the game blocks it)

The 2-Gift-Per-Week Rule

You can only give each villager 2 gifts per week (the week resets every Monday). Exception: on their birthday, you can give 1 gift that doesn't count toward the weekly limit.

This means friendship building is a slow, sustained effort over seasons — not something you can rush in one day.

Loved Gifts by Villager

Giving loved gifts is the fastest path to high friendship. Here are the key ones:

Marriage Candidates

Villager Loved Gifts
Abigail Amethyst, Blackberry Cobbler, Chocolate Cake, Pufferfish, Pumpkin, Spicy Eel
Alex Complete Breakfast, Salmon Dinner
Elliott Crab Cakes, Duck Feather, Lobster, Pomegranate, Tom Kha Soup
Emily Amethyst, Aquamarine, Cloth, Emerald, Jade, Ruby, Survival Burger, Topaz, Wool
Harvey Coffee, Pickles, Super Meal, Truffle Oil, Wine
Haley Coconut, Fruit Salad, Pink Cake, Sunflower
Leah Goat Cheese, Poppyseed Muffin, Salad, Stir Fry, Truffle, Vegetable Medley, Wine
Maru Battery Pack, Cauliflower, Cheese Cauliflower, Diamond, Gold Bar, Iridium Bar, Miner's Treat, Pepper Poppers, Radioactive Bar, Rhubarb Pie, Strawberry
Penny Diamond, Melon, Poppy, Poppyseed Muffin, Red Plate, Roots Platter, Sandfish, Tom Kha Soup
Sam Cactus Fruit, Maple Bar, Pizza, Tigerseye
Sebastian Frozen Tear, Obsidian, Pumpkin Soup, Sashimi, Void Egg
Shane Hot Pepper, Pepper Poppers, Pizza

Universal Loved Gifts (Work for Almost Everyone)

  • Prismatic Shard — Loved by all except Haley, Harvey
  • Pearl — Loved by all except Haley
  • Rabbit's Foot — Loved by all except Penny, Haley, and Jas
  • Golden Pumpkin — Loved by all except Haley
  • Magic Rock Candy — Loved by most

Strategy: Keep 2-3 Gems in your chest for birthdays. Mine geodes and process them at the Blacksmith — Amethysts and Aquamarines appear frequently and are loved by multiple villagers.

Birthday Calendar

Giving a gift on a villager's birthday multiplies the friendship gain by 8. A loved gift on their birthday = 640 points — almost 2.5 hearts in one gift.

Spring Summer Fall Winter
4: Kent 4: Jas 2: George 2: Evelyn
7: Lewis 8: Gus 5: Elliott 7: Caroline

Check the in-game calendar (bulletin board in town square) every day to avoid missing birthdays.

Marriage: How It Works

Requirements

To marry a villager in Stardew Valley:

  1. Reach 8 hearts with them (requires completing all heart events up to 8)
  2. See all heart events (they trigger automatically when you enter the right location at the right time — sometimes you need to trigger them in specific seasons)
  3. Upgrade your house to have a bedroom (Robin's construction, 50,000g + 150 Wood)
  4. Buy a Mermaid's Pendant from the Old Mariner (appears on the beach on rainy days in Spring and Summer) for 5,000g

Once you give the Mermaid's Pendant, you're engaged. Marriage happens 3 days later.

What Spouses Do

After marriage, your spouse:

  • Moves into your farmhouse
  • Has a dedicated room on the right side
  • Does small chores: sometimes waters crops, sometimes feeds animals
  • Gives you gifts and cooked food
  • Has unique daily dialogue that changes by season and weather

Friendship continues after marriage — hearts can rise to 14. Give your spouse a gift weekly and talk to them daily to maintain high friendship. Neglected spouses become slightly less helpful.

Spouse Comparison (Practical)

Spouse Best Gift-Back Special Perk
Emily Cloth Clothes-making ability
Leah Salad, artisan goods Gives Wood and Stone
Harvey Coffee, meals Gives food buffs
Penny Cooked meals Gives meals frequently
Maru Bombs, food Gives useful craft items
Abigail Food, equipment Goes into the mines with you
Alex Food Gives Fried Egg daily
Sam Food, music Gives Maple Bar
Sebastian Food Gives Coffee
Shane Eggs, food Gives pepper items
Elliott Food Gives meals
Haley Food Gives Haley's Solar Essence

Friendship Benefits Beyond Marriage

Even if you're not pursuing marriage, high friendship with every villager provides:

Recipes: Most villagers send you cooking recipes by mail at higher heart levels. These recipes are the only way to learn many dishes.

Gifts by mail: Villagers occasionally send items — seeds, food, ores — at 3+ hearts.

Sam at 3 hearts: He gives you a recipe for Pizza.

Willy at 4 hearts: Gives you a recipe for Dish O' The Sea, and later unlocks boat access.

Wizard at 4 hearts: Unlocks the ability to change your character's appearance.

Dwarf at 4 hearts: Requires learning Dwarvish (donate 4 Dwarvish Scrolls to museum). Can then buy rare items from him.

Krobus (Void creature): Can become a roommate instead of a spouse — unique option if you don't want to pursue romance.

Year 1 Social Strategy

You can't max all relationships in Year 1 — there's not enough time and gift capacity. Prioritize:

Talk to everyone daily — it's free and takes 30 seconds of playtime to hit 5-6 villagers on your morning walk to the mine.

Prioritize the marriage candidate you're interested in — focus your 2 weekly gifts on them to reach 8 hearts by end of Year 1 or early Year 2.

Never miss birthdays — check the calendar each week. A single birthday gift can be worth a week of normal gifting.

Give cheap loved gifts — Amethyst (found in mines) is loved by Abigail and Emily. Leek (foraged in Spring) is liked by many. Daffodil (Spring forage) is liked by most. These are free and efficient.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How do you increase friendship in Stardew Valley?

Give villagers gifts up to 2 times per week (each gift gives +50 friendship points, or +80 for a loved gift). Talk to them daily for +20 points. Complete heart events (story cutscenes that trigger at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hearts). Avoid giving hated gifts (-80 points) and missing their birthdays (-20 points per missed day).

Who is the best person to marry in Stardew Valley?

There's no objectively best spouse — it depends on what you value. Emily gives useful gifts and has a charming personality. Leah gives artisan goods. Harvey gives food. Penny gives cooked meals. Many players love Abigail for her adventurous personality and the fact she eats rocks. All spouses move into your farmhouse and help with chores after marriage.

What are the best gifts in Stardew Valley?

Universal loved gifts that work for almost everyone: Prismatic Shard, Pearl, Rabbit's Foot, and Golden Pumpkin. For specific villagers, learn their personal loved gifts — Emily loves Amethyst, Sebastian loves Frozen Tear, Penny loves Diamonds. Check the calendar for birthdays (gifts on a birthday give 8× the normal points).

Can you marry multiple people in Stardew Valley?

No, you can only be married to one person at a time in the base game. You can divorce your spouse (at Mayor Lewis's house for 50,000g) and remarry someone else, but the divorced spouse will remember and be slightly cold to you. The mod community has added polyamory options if that's of interest.

What happens after you get married in Stardew Valley?

Your spouse moves into your upgraded farmhouse (needs a bedroom addition from Robin). They'll do small tasks around the farm: watering crops, feeding animals, sometimes giving you gifts or cooked food. Each spouse has unique post-marriage dialogue and daily behavior. Their hearts can drop if you ignore them — give a gift weekly to maintain the relationship.
