Stardew Valley Fishing Guide: How to Fish, Best Spots, and All Legendary Fish

Fishing Is More Than a Side Activity

Fishing in Stardew Valley is one of the most profitable skills in the early game — and one of the most satisfying once you've mastered the minigame. A skilled fisherman can earn more gold per day than a farmer in Year 1, catch rare fish needed for the Community Center, and unlock the best fishing tackle for legendary pursuits.

The minigame has a learning curve. This guide gets you through it and into the part where fishing becomes genuinely fun.

How the Fishing Minigame Works

When a fish bites, a vertical bar appears. Your goal:

  • Green bar: Controlled by you — click/tap to move it up, release to let gravity pull it down
  • Fish icon: Moves erratically — up, down, sudden jumps
  • Progress bar (right side): Fills when the fish is inside your green bar, drains when it's outside
  • Catch: Progress bar reaches 100%
  • Escape: Fish breaks free if progress bar empties completely

The key skill: Anticipating where the fish will move next rather than reacting. Most fish have patterns — quick bursts upward followed by slow drifts down, or short rapid oscillations. After a few catches of the same species, you'll start predicting their movement.

What Makes Fish Harder

  • Fish difficulty rating (shown as a colored dot): Green = easy, yellow = medium, red = hard
  • Fish size: Larger fish move faster and more unpredictably
  • Treasure chests: Sometimes appear during a catch — hover over them briefly to collect while keeping the fish in your bar (optional)

Fishing Skill: What Each Level Unlocks

Level Benefit
1 Fishing unlocked
2 Fiberglass Rod available at Willy's
3 Bait crafting recipe
4 Recycling Machine recipe
5 Fisher (+25% fish value) OR Trapper (cheaper crab pots)
6 Iridium Rod available at Willy's
7 Wild Bait recipe
8 Crab Pot crafting
9 Lure Master (no bait needed)
10 Angler (+50% fish value) OR Pirate (double treasure chests)

Level 5 profession choice: Fisher vs Trapper

  • Fisher → leads to Angler at Level 10 (+50% fish value) — better for active fishing income
  • Trapper → leads to Mariner or Lure Master — better for passive crab pot income

Recommended path for income: Fisher → Angler. The 50% fish value bonus at Level 10 makes legendary fish worth up to 5,000g each.

Fishing Rods and Tackle

Rods

Rod Cost Special
Bamboo Pole Free (Willy's gift) No bait, no tackle
Fiberglass Rod $1,800 (Level 2) Supports bait
Iridium Rod $7,500 (Level 6) Supports bait AND tackle

Switch to Fiberglass Rod immediately at Level 2. Bait reduces wait time between bites by ~50%, dramatically increasing fish caught per hour.

Essential Tackle (Iridium Rod Only)

Tackle Effect Best For
Trap Bobber Fish bar drains 33% slower when fish escapes Legendary fish, difficult species
Cork Bobber Increases bar size slightly Lower-skill fishing
Dressed Spinner Faster bite rate Any high-density spot
Treasure Hunter More treasure chests Income maximization

For legendary fish: Always use the Trap Bobber. The slower bar drain gives you crucial extra time to recover when the fish makes a sudden move.

The 5 Legendary Fish

Each legendary fish can only be caught once. They require high fishing skill and the right conditions.

1. Legend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Hardest)

  • Location: Mountain Lake
  • Season: Spring
  • Condition: Rainy day
  • Skill Requirement: Level 10 ideal (minimum 5)
  • Value: 5,000g base (7,500g with Angler profession, Iridium quality)
  • Difficulty: The hardest fish in the game — erratic, fast, large

Strategy: Level 10 fishing + Trap Bobber + Dish O' The Sea food buff. Cast as far as possible into the lake (deeper water = better fish). Be patient — it may take 10-20 attempts before the bite.

2. Mutant Carp ⭐⭐⭐

  • Location: The Sewers (access via Rusty Key from Gunther's museum at 60 donations)
  • Season: All year
  • Condition: Any time
  • Value: 1,000g base
  • Difficulty: Medium — the sewer is easier than the Legend

3. Crimsonfish ⭐⭐⭐

  • Location: Ocean (east pier)
  • Season: Summer
  • Condition: Any time, east pier cast point specifically
  • Value: 1,500g base
  • Difficulty: Hard — requires casting from the east pier specifically

4. Angler ⭐⭐⭐

  • Location: River (north of JojaMart bridge)
  • Season: Fall
  • Condition: Any time
  • Value: 900g base
  • Difficulty: Medium-hard

5. Glacierfish ⭐⭐⭐

  • Location: Forest river (south of Leah's cottage, arrowhead island)
  • Season: Winter
  • Condition: Any time
  • Value: 1,000g base
  • Difficulty: Hard — specific casting position required (tip of the island)

Fishing Income: Is It Worth It?

Fishing in Year 1 is often more profitable than farming per hour spent. Here's why:

Early game: Crops take days to harvest. Fish sell immediately. A morning of fishing at the mountain lake can earn 500-1,500g in 2 hours of game time.

Mid game: Fish quality improves with skill. Gold and Iridium quality fish sell for 1.5-2× base value. Catfish (200g), Octopus (150g), and Pufferfish (200g) are excellent income sources.

Late game: Legendary fish pay massive one-time windfalls, and the Angler profession (+50% to fish value) makes every fishing trip more profitable.

Crab Pots (passive income): Place them in water, bait them, collect daily. They don't require the minigame and produce consistent passive income alongside your active fishing.

Community Center Fishing Bundle

The Fishing Bundle in the Community Center requires:

  • Sunfish
  • Catfish
  • Shad
  • Sardine
  • Eel (ocean, spring/fall rain, 4pm–2am)
  • Pufferfish (summer ocean, 12pm–4pm)
  • Tuna (summer/winter ocean)
  • Red Snapper (summer/fall ocean)
  • Tiger Trout (fall/winter mountain lake)
  • Super Cucumber (summer/fall ocean, 6pm–2am)
  • Walleye (fall river, rain)
  • Woodskip (forest, any season, any time)

Most missed fish: Woodskip (forest area behind the Community Center, through the locked gate — unlock by repairing the bridge via the crafts room bundle), Eel (rain-only in spring/fall), and Tiger Trout (only fall/winter, mountain lake).

よくある質問

How do I fish in Stardew Valley?

Cast your rod by holding the action button — longer hold = farther cast. When a fish bites, a minigame appears: keep the green bar under the fish icon by clicking or tapping. The green bar follows your input; the fish moves erratically. Fill the progress bar on the right to catch it. Higher fishing skill makes the green bar larger and fish easier to hold.

What is the best fishing spot in Stardew Valley?

The mountain lake (north of town) is the best early spot — easy fish, close to pelican town, and contains the Woodskip (a hard-to-find fish needed for the community center). The ocean south of town has the highest-value fish in summer (Pufferfish, Octopus). The forest river has Catfish in spring and fall rain.

How do I catch legendary fish in Stardew Valley?

Each of the 5 legendary fish is caught once per save file at a specific location during a specific season. The Legend (mountain lake, spring, rainy) is the hardest. Use Iridium Rod + Trap Bobber + high fishing skill (level 10 ideal). Eat Dish O' The Sea (+3 fishing) before attempting legendaries if your skill is below 8.

What fishing rod should I use in Stardew Valley?

Buy the Fiberglass Rod from Willy's shop at fishing level 2 ($1,800) — it lets you use bait, which reduces wait time between bites. Upgrade to the Iridium Rod at level 6 ($7,500) — it supports both bait AND tackle. Tackle (Trap Bobber, Cork Bobber) makes a significant difference for difficult fish.

How do I level up fishing fast in Stardew Valley?

Fish any fish repeatedly — all catches give XP. Use bait on your rod to reduce wait time between bites. The mountain lake is good early because it has easier fish you can catch consistently rather than failing attempts on hard fish. Eating food that boosts fishing (Dish O' The Sea, Seafoam Pudding) speeds up leveling by increasing your effective skill for better catch rates.
