Why Relationships Matter
Friendships in Stardew Valley aren't just flavor. Each heart level unlocks something: a recipe, a useful item, or a story moment that deepens your understanding of the town. Higher friendship means villagers send you gifts in the mail. Marriage brings a companion who helps on the farm and gives you daily food buffs.
More practically: Pelican Town is small. You'll walk past these people every day. Getting to know them transforms the town from background scenery into a community you care about.
How the System Works
Friendship Points and Hearts
Every villager tracks friendship in points. 250 points = 1 heart. Hearts cap at 10 for regular villagers, 14 for spouses (8 to become dateable, then 14 after marriage with a Mermaid's Pendant).
Ways to gain points:
- Talk to them: +20 per day (only first conversation counts)
- Give a liked gift: +45 points
- Give a loved gift: +80 points
- Give on their birthday: ร8 multiplier (so a loved gift on a birthday = 640 points)
- Complete a bundle item they mentioned
- Help with a request on the bulletin board: varies
Ways to lose points:
- Give a hated gift: -40 points
- Miss a birthday (you don't give a gift): -20 points ร number of days missed
- Marry without first completing a heart event: impossible (the game blocks it)
The 2-Gift-Per-Week Rule
You can only give each villager 2 gifts per week (the week resets every Monday). Exception: on their birthday, you can give 1 gift that doesn't count toward the weekly limit.
This means friendship building is a slow, sustained effort over seasons โ not something you can rush in one day.
Loved Gifts by Villager
Giving loved gifts is the fastest path to high friendship. Here are the key ones:

Marriage: How It Works
Requirements
To marry a villager in Stardew Valley:
- Reach 8 hearts with them (requires completing all heart events up to 8)
- See all heart events (they trigger automatically when you enter the right location at the right time โ sometimes you need to trigger them in specific seasons)
- Upgrade your house to have a bedroom (Robin's construction, 50,000g + 150 Wood)
- Buy a Mermaid's Pendant from the Old Mariner (appears on the beach on rainy days in Spring and Summer) for 5,000g
Once you give the Mermaid's Pendant, you're engaged. Marriage happens 3 days later.
What Spouses Do
After marriage, your spouse:
- Moves into your farmhouse
- Has a dedicated room on the right side
- Does small chores: sometimes waters crops, sometimes feeds animals
- Gives you gifts and cooked food
- Has unique daily dialogue that changes by season and weather
Friendship continues after marriage โ hearts can rise to 14. Give your spouse a gift weekly and talk to them daily to maintain high friendship. Neglected spouses become slightly less helpful.
Spouse Comparison (Practical)
| Spouse | Best Gift-Back | Special Perk |
|---|---|---|
| Emily | Cloth | Clothes-making ability |
| Leah | Salad, artisan goods | Gives Wood and Stone |
| Harvey | Coffee, meals | Gives food buffs |
| Penny | Cooked meals | Gives meals frequently |
| Maru | Bombs, food | Gives useful craft items |
| Abigail | Food, equipment | Goes into the mines with you |
| Alex | Food | Gives Fried Egg daily |
| Sam | Food, music | Gives Maple Bar |
| Sebastian | Food | Gives Coffee |
| Shane | Eggs, food | Gives pepper items |
| Elliott | Food | Gives meals |
| Haley | Food | Gives Haley's Solar Essence |
Friendship Benefits Beyond Marriage
Even if you're not pursuing marriage, high friendship with every villager provides:
Recipes: Most villagers send you cooking recipes by mail at higher heart levels. These recipes are the only way to learn many dishes.
Gifts by mail: Villagers occasionally send items โ seeds, food, ores โ at 3+ hearts.
Sam at 3 hearts: He gives you a recipe for Pizza.
Willy at 4 hearts: Gives you a recipe for Dish O' The Sea, and later unlocks boat access.
Wizard at 4 hearts: Unlocks the ability to change your character's appearance.
Dwarf at 4 hearts: Requires learning Dwarvish (donate 4 Dwarvish Scrolls to museum). Can then buy rare items from him.
Krobus (Void creature): Can become a roommate instead of a spouse โ unique option if you don't want to pursue romance.
Year 1 Social Strategy
You can't max all relationships in Year 1 โ there's not enough time and gift capacity. Prioritize:
Talk to everyone daily โ it's free and takes 30 seconds of playtime to hit 5-6 villagers on your morning walk to the mine.
Prioritize the marriage candidate you're interested in โ focus your 2 weekly gifts on them to reach 8 hearts by end of Year 1 or early Year 2.
Never miss birthdays โ check the calendar each week. A single birthday gift can be worth a week of normal gifting.
Give cheap loved gifts โ Amethyst (found in mines) is loved by Abigail and Emily. Leek (foraged in Spring) is liked by many. Daffodil (Spring forage) is liked by most. These are free and efficient.
